Earlier in the week we had a visit from Beth from the Martha's Vineyard Museum. She came in to teach us all about the East Chop Lighthouse. We heard an oral history from Alice Purdy, the daughter of George Purdy. They heard all about what life was like taking care of the lighthouse before it became electric. The students also learned all about the different parts of a lighthouse and the importance of the light. They learned about the lens and how it helps focus and send the light out further to help ships from crashing. The kids had a blast going to to visit the East Chop Lighthouse. They met Rob Hammett, the lighthouse keeper, and got to learn from the source all about the lighthouse. They also got the chance to climb all the way up to the gallery to take in the view as well as learn about what the lighthouse keeper would do to the lighthouse to keep the light up and running. It was a great day to see the lighthouse! Check out the Snap Shot page to see more pictures from the trip! |
Along with lighthouses, we have started a unit on fractions. The kids are learning more about parts of a whole and mainly focusing on halves and fourths. We have also started learning more about American symbols. We will start with diving deep into the meaning of the Pledge of Allegiance and then move on the learning more about the American flag! There are a lot of fun things happening in first grade!
