This month has been full of projects and fun trips! We were treated to a fun activity with our reading buddies. The kids got to learn a little bit more about their buddies through a comparing activity where they found things they had in common with their buddy. The kids really enjoyed creating themselves and talking with their buddies and finding commonalities.
We also had the opportunity to go to the Martha's Vineyard Museum to learn more about farming on the island. The kids got to examine artifacts from the island. They put on their "Mickey Mouse" gloves to touch the artifacts and interact with them. They were detectives and figured out on their own what the tools may have been used for. We met Farmer Brown who gave us an insight to the tools and how he used them on his farm. We also go to go into the museum and see other inventions that were made on the island. One of them was the "Do-nothing Machine". The kids enjoyed watching the different parts of the machine and discovered that it does do something! Check out our Snap Shot page for more pictures!

We started our engineering unit on hand pollinators. The kids first learned about technology and what it is. They learned that any object that was created to solve a problem is a technology. They were very surprise! In the picture, they are discovering a new technology, the eraser! In a story that we read, a little girl from the Dominican Republic named Mariana is having a hard time getting her plant from Hawaii to grow berries again. Through observations she discovers that her plant is not being pollinated. The kids brainstormed ideas as to how she could solve her problem. They suggested moving to Hawaii and getting the bugs that pollinate her plant to where she lives. In the story, the little girl creates her own hand pollinator. The kids learned that hand pollinators replace the insect in the pollination system. Little do the kids know that they will be creating their own hand pollinators like Mariana did!
